NBA Free Agency 2024 Preview: Ranking the Best Centers Available
Having already ranked the best PGs, SGs, SFs and PFs expected to enter free agency next summer, let's wrap up this offseason series by highlighting the top 10 centers set to hit the open market in July of 2025:
1. Nic Claxton - Brooklyn Nets - Unrestricted:
The Nets had plenty of ups and downs during a wild and unpredictable 2022-23 campaign, but Claxton was a constant, posting career highs across the board. He averaged 12.6 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in 30 minutes a night over 76 games, while also shooting a league-leading 70.4 percent from the field. In the process, the big man became the first and only player in NBA history to convert over 70% of his FG attempts and block at least 2.5 shots per game. The Nets re-signed Claxton to a two-year, $17.3 million deal in 2022, but he is due for a massive raise in 2025.
2. Jonas Valanciunas - New Orleans Pelicans - Unrestricted:
Valanciunas told Lithuanian media over the summer that he has had some conversations with the Pelicans about potentially signing an extension before hitting free agency following the 2023-24 season. "We had some talks with [the team]. I think this summer won't be easy for them because they will have to make a few key decisions. Our season didn't go as planned, so there will definitely be changes," Valanciunas told 24Sek's Kestas Rimkus. "I would like to stay and extend my contract," Valanciunas added. "Obviously, during the season, you try to help the team as much as possible, but when the summer comes, you try to take care of your own things – how to extend the contract and stuff."
