Knicks Offseason To-Do List - Part 4
Over the first two decades of this century, the Knicks lost more games than any other team in the league. They employed 13 different head coaches, none of whom lasted more than three full seasons.
We have already discussed what the Knicks need to prioritize regarding the roster this summer: sign Jalen Brunson to an extension and bring back both OG Anunoby and Isaiah Hartenstein. However, the New York front office also likely wants to make sure the team's head coach is also taken care of.
Just one season remains on the five-year contract Thibodeau signed to become the Knicks' head coach in July 2020. Since then, Thibodeau has exceeded expectations and said after Indiana eliminated New York, "The Knicks have been great to me. This is where I want to be."
Team president Leon Rose, who once served as Thibs' agent, is fully expected to do what it takes to keep him in NYC long-term.
Over Thibodeau's first four years with the club, the Knicks posted a cumulative 175-143 (.550) record, making him the fifth-winningest coach in franchise history behind only Pat Riley, Jeff Van Gundy, Joe Lapchick and Red Holzman. Thibs has presided over 14 postseason wins, also the fifth-most among Knicks coaches. Thibodeau recorded his 500th career win this past January.
However, to fully appreciate the job Thibs has done since arriving in New York, it's imperative to understand just how low the franchise had fallen before he was handed the reigns.
