Wembanyama, playing in the U.S. for the first time, racked up a mind-boggling 37 points (on 55% shooting), four rebounds, seven 3-pointers (7-of-11 from downtown) and five blocks.
The Knicks' victory over the Pistons (which we talked about here) was one of four preseason games played Tuesday night. However, the collective eyes of the NBA weren't on any of those contests but on a game taking place in Henderson, Nevada, about 20 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip.
In arguably the most hyped exhibition game between two prospects since LeBron James and St. Vincent-St. Mary High School took on Carmelo Anthony and Oak Hill Academy two decades ago, Victor Wembanyama and his Metropolitans 92 squad, a pro team from France, squared off against Scoot Henderson's G League Ignite at the Dollar Loan Center Tuesday evening.
Somehow, the game and the two elite prospects exceeded expectations.
