Obi and IQ Close Out The Season in Style
Happy Monday, everybody! Congrats are in order - we survived the entire 82-game season!
There will obviously be plenty of time to look forward to the draft and free agency and look back on the many reasons why the Knicks lost so many games… but before we do, let's recap New York's final two contests of the 2021-22 campaign.
After Obi Toppin erupted for a career-high 35 points in a win over the Wizards on Friday, he set a new career-high Sunday night, pouring in 42 points (16-of-28 FGs, 4-of-4 FTs) to go along with ten rebounds, three assists and six triples in NY's victory over the Raptors.
Yes, Obi scored 77 points on 60% shooting over the Knicks' final two games. In the process, he joined Carmelo Anthony as just the second player in New York's franchise history to tally more than 75 points, more than 11 three-pointers and more than ten rebounds over a two-game stretch (Allan Houston and Steph Marbury would also be in that club if we didn't factor in the boards).
It's hard to overstate just how impressive Toppin looked over the past two weeks. For a season that provided very few highs, Obi's production late in the year will allow Knicks fans to enter the summer with something to be quite excited about.
With Julius Randle sidelined by a sore quad, Toppin started each of the Knicks' final five games and averaged 27.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.8 made three-pointers, 2.8 assists and 1.0 blocks, while shooting over 55% from the floor, over 46% from downtown and over 86% from the charity stripe.
The only other players to average more than 27 points and six boards per game in April were Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, Lebron James, Luka Doncic, Pascal Siakam and Kevin Durant. You probably heard of those guys. Of this group, Obi and Doncic were the only players to average more than three treys to go along with the 27 & 6.
The Knicks won three of their final four games to close out the season, with New York outscoring their opponents by a whopping 62 points in the 157 minutes Toppin was on the court.
